TEFAF MAASTRICHT 2016
TEFAF
Maastricht is widely recognised as the world’s leading art fair, annually
attracting major collectors, both private and institutional, from around the
globe. In order to satisfy an ever-changing and increasingly demanding market,
TEFAF constantly monitors and raises its exacting standards and commitment to
quality to engender the kind of excitement and anticipation that sets the
international art world alight each March. TEFAF 2016 will take place from
11-20 March at the MECC (Maastricht Exhibition and Congress Centre),
Maastricht, The Netherlands.
TEFAF MAASTRICHT ANNOUNCES COLLECTING
COLLECTORS, THE 2016 LOAN EXHIBITION OF MASTER DRAWINGS AND PRINTS FROM MUSEUM
BOIJMANS VAN BEUNINGEN IN ROTTERDA
Helvoirt,
18 February 2016. The exhibition Collecting Collectors will take place in the
TEFAF Paper section and will offer visitors a small but choice selection of
master drawings and prints from Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen which were
acquired over the last 167 years. A particular highlight of the collection are
the works by Fra Bartolommeo (1473-1517), numbering 400 sheets with 500
drawings assembled in two luxury albums by Florentine collector Niccolò
Gabburri in 1729. One of the albums will be included in the selection at TEFAF
Maastricht 2016, as a prelude to the forthcoming large Fra Bartolommeo
exhibition in Rotterdam in the autumn of 2016.
The
collection of prints and drawings is the largest subset of Museum Boijmans Van
Beuningen’s collection, containing around 17,000 drawings and 65,000 prints. It
provides an overview of western art history from the Middle Ages until the
present day. Included in the exhibition are works by old masters such as
Albrecht Dürer, Lucas van Leyden and Rembrandt van Rijn to modern and
contemporary artists like Paul Cézanne, Salvador Dalí, René Magritte and Yayoi
Kusama.
Museum
Boijmans Van Beuningen is named after two collectors who both were essential in
the establishment of the museum’s international reputation – Frans Boijmans
(1767-1847) and D.G. van Beuningen (1877-1955). Boijmans’ bequest founded the
museum in 1849 and in 1940 Van Beuningen acquired and then donated the majority
of the Franz Koenigs collection of master drawings. Other eminent collectors
who contributed greatly to the collections were Dr. Adriaan Domela Nieuwenhuis
(1850-1935) and Dr. Johan Bierens de Haan (1867-1951).

TEFAF
has long been selected as the platform of choice for dealers to present fresh-
to-market and re-discovered works. Beck & Eggeling, Düsseldorf, will offer
Dynamik Structure, 1957, one of the earliest works by German artist Heinz Mack
(1931-present). This work has been acquired directly from the artist’s estate
and will be offered for sale for the first time at TEFAF. Mack is well known
for his contributions to op art, light art and kinetic art, and this work was
created in the same year that the ZERO Movement, of which Mack was a founder
member, was established.
German
Expressionism has historically been well represented at TEFAF and the 2016
edition of the fair will see at least two exceptional examples on display.
Nächtliche Phantasielandschaft, circa 1930-32, by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner
(1880-1938), which has been also been acquired directly from the artist’s
estate and will be on display with Galerie Henze & Ketterer,
Wichtrach/Bern. The nocturnal subject matter of the painting and the literal
translation to ‘Nocturnal imaginary landscape’ gives the viewer an insight into
Kirchner’s imagination. In addition, with strong use of night-blue and yellow,
the work has a sense of melancholy. Alongside Kirchner, Galerie de la
Béraudière, Geneva, will bring La Horde, 1927, by Max Ernst (1891-1976), which
has been in a private collection since 1966. Ernst’s iconic style is in
abundance in this work and it demonstrates eloquently how central he was to the
Dada and Surrealist movements.
TEFAF
is known for the annual showcase it provides for works of art from all periods,
from earliest antiquity to the present day. One of the earliest objects within
the 2016 Fair, is an Egyptian Lug-handled Jar with Flamingoes from the
Predynastic Period, Naqada II, circa 3500-3300 B.C. Exhibited by Cahn
International, Basel, this conically tapered jar has been crafted from clay and
has three pierced lug handles on the shoulder, decorated on both sides with a
group of nine stylised flamingoes.

TEFAF
Design regularly wins plaudits for the quality of objects for sale as well as
the standards of display. Galerie Dansk Møbelkunst, Paris/Copenhagen, will
bring a pair of outstanding deck chairs by one of Denmark’s finest makers, Hans
Wegner (1914-2007), whose inimitable style has subsequently been reproduced by
many makers around the world. Wegner was one of the foremost Danish cabinet and
furniture makers, who had considerable influence on the rise in popularity for
mid-century Danish design.
Galerie
Aveline, Paris, will bring an exceptional set of six carved and giltwood
Régence armchairs (1715-1723), which are upholstered with tapestries, most
probably from the Beauvais factory, one of the most revered workshops in
France. The tapestries depict scenes from the Fables de la Fontaine, which
comprised 239 fables of varying lengths and were in the main adapted from the
classical fabulists Aesop, Babrius and Phaedrus.
TEFAF Maastricht

will be held in the MECC Maastricht from 11-20 March, 2016, but also in the
number of art collectors, both private and institutional, that regard TEFAF as
a must-see event in the international art market calendar.
